Programme
Programme Objectives
- a landscape shaped over centuries: The Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, is one of Europe’s largest and most remarkable designed landscapes. Covering approximately 200 km², it brings together chateaux, garden architecture, ponds, floodplain forests and vineyards in a composition shaped over several centuries.
- a landscape facing change: Today, the area faces a range of complex challenges: protecting its cultural heritage, managing increasing visitor numbers, conserving biodiversity and adapting to climate change.
- explore the landscape first-hand:
- The summer school gives you the opportunity to engage directly with these challenges. Working in international teams, you will conduct field surveys, use GIS to analyse the area’s values, limits and conflicts, and meet with local stakeholders and site managers.
- You will also use the Research by Design method to turn your findings into spatial proposals.
- imagine different futures:
- Each team will explore a different future for the area: putting heritage first, developing sustainable tourism, giving the landscape back to nature, or finding a balance between these priorities.
- You will test your scenario against the others and consider its impacts on landscape character, heritage, biodiversity and recreation.
- share and defend your ideas: At the end of the summer school, you will present your proposal to the public and create a finished poster for your portfolio.
- what you´ll gain: Along the way, you will gain hands-on experience in landscape analysis, scenario planning and impact assessment. You will learn from experienced tutors and local experts, and exchange ideas with students from across Europe.
