Students from non-EU countries are required to have a long-term VISA for the purpose of study or a long-term RESIDENCE PERMIT for the purpose of study in order to travel to the Czech Republic (or to other Member States of the European Union) to study. (Please note that citizens of the following countries are extempt from the visa requirement for coming to the Czech Republic as tourists for a period shorter than 90 days. However, students usually come for one semester that always lasts longer than three months, and therefore they need a long-term VISA for the purpose of study or a long-term RESIDENCE PERMIT for the purpose of study.

Before your arrival

Where to apply for a long-term VISA or a long-term RESIDENCE PERMIT

  • As soon as possible, after reading all the instructions properly and preparing all required documents.
  • The process of obtaining a long-term VISA or a long-term RESIDENCE PERMIT can take up to 60 days.

The registration for a meeting for filling an application for a long-term VISA or a long-term RESIDENCE at the Embassy or Consulate is done by means of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs online system VISAPOINT, if this system is available in the country concerned. Contact the Embassy or Consulate of the Czech Republic in your home country to find out if they use the VISAPOINT system. In that case, register for a meeting for filling an application as soon as possible!

a) Long-term VISA for the purpose of study (D/VC)

  • A long-term VISA is intended for exchange students whose period of stay lasts from 3 months to 1 year. The form is available here
  • Students pay no consular fee for a long-term VISA for the purpose of study
  • The required Emergency travel medical insurance is cheaper (around 100 Euro per 6 months for students under 26 years of age, depending on the insurance company) than the Comprehensive/complex travel medical insurance required in case of applying for a residence permit. Please read the guidelines “Travel medical insurance for incoming students”.
  • VISA must be picked up before your departure personally by the student at the Embassy or Consulate of the Czech Republic in your home country.

b) Long-term STAY (RESIDENCE PERMIT) for the purpose of study (D/VR)

  • A long-term RESIDENCE PERMIT is intended for exchange students whose period of stay lasts from 6 months up to 1 year or longer. The form is available here
  • The consular fee is 500 CZK. Additional 2,500 CZK is charged after arrival, for the residence permit card.
  • The required Comprehensive/complex travel medical insurance is more expensive (around 200 Euro per 6 months for students under 26 years of age, depending on the insurance company) than the Emergency travel medical insurance required in case of applying for a long-term visa.   • The RESIDENCE PERMIT must be picked up within 3 working days after your arrival in the Czech Republic personally by the student at the Department for Asylum and Migration Policy of the Ministry of the Interior. Biometric data are taken during the visit, and within further 30 days the student is invited to pick up the biometric residence card.

We ask exchange students to arrive within first two weeks of the semester. Later arrivals are possible only upon approval. The latest you can arrive is 25/09/2022 as attandance for classes are a part of the final evaluation and traditionally, students are allowed only 2 absences per subject! If you know that you will be arriving later then the start of the semester, you share this with your Incoming Coordinator and your Faculty Coordinator/s!

After your arrival

  • staying in the university halls of residence – do not need to register at the Foreign Police, the registration will be made by the halls of residence
  • staying in a private accommodation – need to register at the Foreign Police (Cizinecká policie) within working days after arrival:
